Team Building Activities for Students

Many schools and colleges around the world have made team building activities for students compulsory. The reason for this is to make students capable of working in a team in their professional careers by generating values like team spirit, co-operation and discipline. To know more about various team building activities for students of school and college, read on...

Sometimes, in your school and professional life, you may be asked to work in a team of students or professionals. There is a lot of difference in working individually and in a team. While working in a team you should be able to respect the knowledge and abilities of your fellow team members. You should have the ability to make a compromise, sometimes as only one suggestion will be finally accepted. Tolerance is the key to success in a teamwork. Professionalism is important in the sense that you should not favor any particular team member just because you have a friendly relationship with him. Punctuality is very vital because the project on which we are working can get delayed if all members are not present at the decided time for work. This will ultimately result in the loss of all members of the team. All students should equally contribute in the process of completing the task. If a certain student remains as a mere spectator while working, he will not learn the basics of the task and will face serious difficulties while working on complicated tasks. Team leadership should be entrusted to a responsible and talented person who has exceptional leadership qualities. Students should learn to keep their personal life and professional life apart. Frustration and feeling of hatred for fellow team members, can seriously affect the quality of the output.

Team Building Activities For School Students Students will be able to work efficiently in a team in their respective careers, if they have good experiences of the same in schools. Here are some activities which can help in achieving our goals:

Obstacle Game The obstacle game is widely used in the physical training sessions in schools. It is a good example of team building activity. In this game, different items referred to as 'obstacles' are arranged and students are asked to jump over, walk around or duck under them. At least two teams of students play this game. One member from each team is blindfolded and he receives instructions from the other team members about how to proceed. Team leaders should give specific and precise instructions after studying the exact height, length and width of the obstacles. The team which does the task correctly for more times wins the game. Teachers are expected to supervise the game and give suggestions to the students to improve their game. This brilliant athletic course will help the blindfolded participant and supporting members to develop the qualities of interpreting information, presence of mind, concentration and stamina.

Participating in Cultural and Extra Curriculum Activities Students should be encouraged to participate in the different cultural and sport related activities. Participating in a drama or stage play is a good platform for the students to prove their talents. Making a good drama or short film requires a good understanding between the scriptwriter, director, technicians, and all other people associated with the project. This helps to inculcate values like hard work, team spirit and perseverance. Sports like cricket, basketball, football, hockey make the children pay careful attention and visualize things in a proper way. Performing practices in a group, participating in school decoration during festivals, conducting research, visiting a place as a part of an educational tour, develop team building abilities of students.

Some More Team Building Activities For Students Tug of war is the classic example of team building exercises. Some mental exercises, like concentration games in a group of four or five children, will help in developing ability to remember things.

Team Building Activities For College Students College students of engineering, medical and management colleges need to work in teams during their college days and later as employees. Engineering students should participate in quiz, paper presentation programs and project presentations. Science students should attend seminars of reputed organizations and institutes together, and get their doubts cleared from the faculties available. These activities develop the overall personality of students. Teamwork makes the process, of completing the alloted work, interesting.

In this competitive world, a single person cannot always complete the given assignments in the given time. This fact underlines the importance of team building activities for students. The government should see to it that students get practical experience along with classroom training and revise the educational system as and when needed.

Fast Ways to Learn Indonesian

The Indonesian language or Bahasa Indonesia is the official national language of Indonesia. It is known as a language that uses agglutination or the process of adding affixes to the base word. This means most of the words in the language are formed by joining different words together. This beautiful language is based on one version of the classical Malay of the Riau-Johor Sultanate. The Indonesian language was first proclaimed as the official language of the country of Indonesia because of the declaration of Indonesian independence in the year 1945 and is currently spoken by almost all of Indonesia's two hundred forty million inhabitants, making it one of the most widely spoken languages in the whole world. The Indonesian language as a modern dialect of Malay has borrowed a great deal of its words and pronunciation from many languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Persian, Portuguese, Sanskrit and many other languages. This makes it a truly fascinating and magnificent language to learn.

There are many ways to learn Indonesian but the easiest and most cutting edge way to do so is through the use of Indonesian audio language tapes. Audio courses are based on the main idea that anticipation, graduated interval recall, learning core vocabulary, and organic learning help the student learn more and as a faster pace than conventional language courses. These tapes cover not only spoken Indonesian but also dabble a little in reading and writing the language. The best part about this method of learning is that aside from being cheaper from enrolling in an Indonesian language course at a school or hiring a private tutor, it gives you the option of being mobile as you go about learning. How so? You just pop the tape or cd into your stereo or even download it into your mp3 player and you can enjoy listening to your language lessons while on the move, in your car, doing chores or even while you are jogging to keep fit.

Another supreme benefit of using Indonesian audio language lessons is that you can continue learning even while you are in a deep sleep. You can listen to your lessons while you are lying in bed at night or even during naps. Studies say that listening to your audio lessons while your mind is in a state of sleep enables you to learn more effectively since your mind is absorbing all of this new information into your subconscious.

An added perk for using Indonesian language audio lessons is that every time you find yourself unsure that you have mastered the lesson you just finished, you can just rewind or repeat the audio lesson at no additional cost, as many times that you desire.

How Learn English: Listen, Laugh, and Stare

Watch children who move to a new country and are surrounded by people speaking a language that they don't know, what do they do? Look at a small child who turns on a video on TV in a language that they've never heard before. What do they do? They listen; they don't try to speak. Their eyes open wide and they listen intently. They don't think about it, they don't try to translate everything, they don't try to speak the new language- but they are learning it.
This was observed by Dr. J. Marvin Brown, founder of the Automatic Language Growth method and the ALGworld school in Thailand. He said, "We look at children who have moved to a new country, and we see them 'listen, laugh, and stare'. The child's secret; ears open, mouths shut, no tests. They become near-native within two years."

Near-native speakers within two years! Most people try to learn English with the usual methods for much longer than two years, and they can't even speak a few sentences in a conversation with a native speaker. I know this because I am an English teacher and I see it every day: students who study English for 5 years and even more, but who can't have even the most simple conversation with me in English.

Dr. Brown went on to say, "Then we look into language classrooms around the world, and we see just the opposite; ears practically closed (the students use their eyes instead), mouths open, and a lot of tests. Very few of these students become near-native."

This is the normal language student: not listening to native speakers, trying to speak before they know how, and taking tests. This is the normal, traditional way of learning English. It doesn't work! You will never become fluent in English in this way.

To learn to speak English you have to learn like a child does naturally. Just listen a lot to native speakers. Don't try to speak. Don't use textbooks. Don't take tests. And it's easier if you are laughing!

Public Speaking is an Art

Public speaking can be referred to as an act of speaking to a group of people or a crowd. This act of speaking is done in order to convince and entertain the people in a formal and polite manner. In North America, the art and science of speaking to a group of people is referred to as forensics which literally gives the meaning 'public argument or debate'.
The real intention of public speaking may be to entertain a crowd or to motivate them for a certain cause or transmitting information. It can also be like telling a simple story.

History of public speaking

The early known framed rules for public speaking dates back to 500 B.C. The principles of public speaking were practiced in Greece. However, there have been certain modifications in the rules and principles of this type of presentation due to the fact that societies and cultures have been changed from the olden days as the technology and other things developed.

Nowadays there are several advanced medium through which we can speak fluently to a group of people. Internet plays a vital part in this sophisticated way of public speaking. Another feature is the video conferencing through which you can see and address the entire crowd even from one end to the other end of the world.

Training for public speaking

There are many clubs that are spread worldwide, which effectively teaches and trains with the art of public speaking. Some of the clubs are Toastmasters, Rostrum, the ASC or Association of Speakers Club and International Training in Communication or ITC. These organizations provide a strategic training for speaking to groups of people.

More often, the training program involves the following structure. The sequence starts with the training to oratory skills followed by the use of gestures, control of voice, vocabulary, speaking notes and the use of humor in between the speech. The training also teaches how to develop a relation with the audience.

Using the platforms that are mentioned above can yield great results. It is possible to develop the speaking skill in a very effective manner. Great leaders such as Hitler, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King are some of the finest examples of good orators or public speakers who had a great impact on the society and had some influence over the people.

International Organizations

As mentioned above there are numerous organizations that offer development program for public speaking. The Toastmasters international is an organization that has many branches or clubs worldwide assisting their members to develop their speaking skills and leadership skills.

Apart from the international organizations, there are also other national organizations that provide guidance program for their country people. For instance, The National Forensics Association is a national non-profitable organization that provides many training sessions that help in improving the speaking and leadership qualities of a person.

The American Forensics Organization is another educational organization that features many new guidance programs that help their country people in improving their public speaking skills. Various countries also have these sorts of national organizations for providing their country people with good speaking skills.

Mathematics Evolution

Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, relation, change, and various topics of pattern, form and entity. Mathematicians seek out patterns and other quantitative dimensions, whether dealing with numbers, spaces, natural science, computers, imaginary abstractions, or other entities.

Mathematicians formulate new conjectures and establish truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. There is debate over whether mathematical objects exist objectively by nature of their logical purity, or whether they are manmade and detached from reality. The mathematician Benjamin Peirce called mathematics “the science that draws necessary conclusions”.
Albert Einstein, on the other hand, stated that “as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.” Through the use of abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics evolved from counting, calculation, measurement, and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Knowledge and use of basic mathematics have always been an inherent and integral part of individual and group life.
Refinements of the basic ideas are visible in mathematical texts originating in the ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese, Greek and Islamic worlds. Rigorous arguments first appeared in Greek mathematics, most notably in Euclid’s Elements. The development continued in fitful bursts until the Renaissance period of the 16th century, when mathematical innovations interacted with new scientific discoveries, leading to an acceleration in research that continues to the present day.
Today, mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences such as economics and psychology. Applied mathematics, the branch of mathematics concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries and sometimes leads to the development of entirely new disciplines.
Mathematicians also engage in pure mathematics, or mathematics for its own sake, without having any application in mind, although practical applications for what began as pure mathematics are often discovered later.

Solar Power Systems

Solar electricity systems have been around for a long time. When the know-how first became obtainable solar cells were heralded to be the end of the oil crisis and the energy crisis. We suddenly had abundant free energy, all of it coming from the sun. Inside ten years solar power systems were predicted to heat and power our homes and businesses. Some folks even thought we would be driving solar-powered cars soon, with long, sleek shapes covered with solar panels.
Unfortunately, the truth didn't quite match up with the dream. Solar panels were expensive to manufacture, and unless you had a lot of panels exposed to a lot of sunlight, solar power systems didn't turn out very much electricity. However, now that we're seeing more improvement in solar power equipment, we may be witnessing a resurgence in solar power systems, at least in particular environments.

Though solar panels still absorb solar energy when it's cloudy outside, they absorb much more energy and therefore supply more power if they're exposed to direct sunlight. Solar power systems are therefore much more useful in Tucson, AZ, then they are in Seattle, WA. Also, solar power systems create more power during longer days, so short Alaskan winter days aren't very beneficial for solar systems. The ideal situation is in the desert, with long days and little cloud cover.

To be helpful, solar power systems don't need to power an entire business population or even provide all of the power for a private Dwelling. Solar power systems are much more effective at heating water than they are at producing electricity. Since standard hot water heaters can consume over a third of a house's electricity, replacing a gas-powered hot water heater with a solar powered heater can reduce a home's energy bill considerably, as well as making the owners eligible for a tax cut in select states.

Solar power systems are also very practical for providing power in locations which are hard to reach with standard power lines. They're extensively utilized for cell phone towers and other reflective antenna arrays located on mountaintops and other hard to reach places. Since these installations don't require a huge deal of power or maintenance to run, solar panels can provide plenty of power without needing to be maintained or refueled. Though we're probably still quite a ways from a completely solar-powered society, we'll likely see many more solar powered devices as solar technology becomes more refined and more effective.

Language Learning - What to Do When Learning a New Language

When learning a new language, some people can end up impatient. I've known more than a couple of people who tried skipping lessons, jumping immediately to more advanced stuff. Needless to say, they failed miserably, actually taking them longer to learn than their peers who followed the course religiously.
Fixed Sentences

One of the lessons I've seen a lot of beginning students try to steamroll through are memorizing fixed sentences. When you're starting out in a new language, it's common to integrate it into your patterns by memorizing sentences, such as how to say things like "Good evening" and "Thank you for help."

Almost every language training software I've seen required students to memorize a lot of these types of common phrases. Many students find the process inane, thinking it's much better to teach them to formulate sentences than to memorize pre-made ones.
Actual Learning

While it is, indeed, better to learn to string your own statements than spout them off memory, language learning just doesn't work like that. The reality is that memorized phrases, for the most part, are all that anyone who's new to a language can handle. Vocabulary is best assimilated through this process, as well as certain amounts of grammar.
Instead of shocking you with grammar constructs you don't have a clue of, language courses are designed to build off from these memorized phrases to teach you actual sentence construction. Without them at the foundation, you'll have little to refer to, making the process of learning all that much more difficult.

Put simply, never underestimate the value of memorized phrases in language learning. It can help you in more ways than you probably expect.

Each of us learn in a different manner. Some pick up material easily when they listen to an instructor talk in front of the class. Others manage best using the solitary convenience of a book or a language learning software.

When it comes to traditional classes, kinesthetic learners usually end up at the tail end of the pack. They're not dumb - just challenged with keeping their concentration when forced to sit through lectures and demonstrations. The difficulty typically lasts past school well into their adult life, making it difficult to pick up information from meetings, seminars and other classroom-style teaching methods.

Such is the plight of tactile learners, who would not fare so badly if learning involved much more hands-on activities. For this reason, it's important to determine the kind of learning you excel at when you decide to go into language training.

If you're a kinesthetic learner, you'll need to find alternative ways of study than what the typical language class will get you. What are some ways to get your hands-on experience in language learning?
1. Some cities have local clubs where members can practice their newfound language skills.
2. When you use reference material - like a book or a language software - try rewriting the lessons in your own words. Since you'll likely have a hard time just taking it in from instruction, working to explain it will likely garner you better results.
3. Practice online. There are many avenues to practice language mastery on the web, from reading blogs in the target language to joining forums where the target vernacular is the primary form of communication.

Learning does become a tad more difficult for those who prefer more tactile approaches to instruction, but it's not impossible. Many have done it and so can you.

How to write a dissertation?

Every student, to attain his/her degree, master's or PhD degree, must submit a dissertation or thesis. It is the key element in all degree programmes and the most important part of one's academic career. Writing a dissertation is not an easy task, as it requires sufficient time and effort. Before writing, make sure that you have selected the right topic, have all the material and most importantly, keep the submission deadline in mind.
Following are some tips that help students to write a good dissertation:  Choose the topic  Thorough research  Organize all the material in proper order  Writing and submission of proposal: Before the submission of final project, students have to submit research proposal. It is the outline of paper. It helps a student to stick to the point. Research proposal contains following sections: * Introduction to the problem * Literature review * Methodology * Expected findings After submission and approval of research proposal, the next step is preparing and organizing material for your project and start working on it.
The final paper contains the following sections:  Title page  Acknowledgement  Contents  Introduction: Aims and objectives of the study is illustrated in introduction  Literature review: It contains previous researches related to the topic  Methodology  Data analysis and findings  Conclusions  Bibliography and references Writing dissertation requires time; proper utilization of resources, constructing proper outline before writing, getting it approved it by the professor are the most important and essential parts of completing the paper.
But before submitting the final copy makes sure that your dissertation is 100% error and plagiarism free. For this, read and re-read the dissertation paper carefully and edit it where required. Proper formatting is also necessary for the dissertation writing; therefore, students must discuss the proper format with their advisors.

Five Reasons You Should Consider Homeschooling Your Children

For this article, I thought I would list five reasons that you should consider homeschooling your children.
Homeschooling is becoming more and more common. Estimates are that there is over 1 million kids being homeschooled in the United States. So what are some of the reasons parents decide to homeschool their children? Let's take a look at five of those reasons.

Better Education

One of the biggest reasons parents decide to homeschool their children is because they feel they can provide for their child a better education. After all, who is going to know the children more and what they need to learn then their parents? If parents choose to homeschool their children, they can decide what the child should know and keep an eye on their education at all times. A child's education is one of the most important things in their life, it needs to be top quality.

Religion

This can be a heated topic, but many parents choose to homeschool their children so that religion can be brought into the education. Whether you agree that religion should be taught in education or not, it's up for the parents to decide what their children learn, not any of us. If you are considering homeschooling your children and you want to include Religion, then go right ahead. If you don't want to use religion, then you don't have to. It's your choice! You're the parent!

Poor Learning Environment

Another reason that parents choose to homeschool their children is due to a poor learning environment at school. Let's face it, the learning environment at school isn't usually too great. Classrooms are filled with distractions, interruptions, etc.
I remember one time in sixth grade, right during the middle of class, my sixth grade teacher actually stopped class to run and call into a radio contest show. Was that really necessary? If you homeschool your children, they don't have to deal with any of this.

Peer Pressure/Safety

Another problem with some schools is the peer pressure from other students and the violence in classrooms. When you send your kids off to school, you just never know who they may interact with and you don't know what they might be exposed too. Will someone get them to try drugs? Will someone hurt them? Homeschooling your children eliminates that problem.

Family Time

And finally, we come to Family time. This is another reason parents choose to homeschool their children. Life can be busy at times. The kids may be at school during the day, but in the evening, dinner is being cooked, homework is being done, the children are out with friends, etc. How often do you really get a chance to spend time with your kids in the evening? By homeschooling your children, you have the chance to be around them the entire day.

These are just five of the many reasons parents choose to homeschool their children. If you are thinking of homeschooling your children, then good luck with it! I also recommend you check out Professor Homeschool. It is an e-book explaining all about how to begin homeschooling. I went ahead and included the link to this e-book in my author information. It has all the information you need to know to get started. So educate yourself with this information and start homeschooling!

How To Write A Book

The passion for writing does not necessarily mean that one can come up with a great novel. Ideas may be born from reading other books, but this won't guarantee that the book you write will be nearly as good as what you patterned it from. It may not even turn out very book-like at all. In fact, there might be a good chance that the book will not materialize.
In this regard, the immediate issue is how to write a book . Book writing for the first time is much like any activity being done for the first time. The only difference is, most activities have fixed how-to guides. Unfortunately, guides on how to write a book would vary greatly from one another.

In all honesty, anyone can write a book . It does not require a license or permission. As long as the words flow, you can string them together and make a coherent flow of thought from them. Put it on paper and there you have the beginnings of a book. The end result may be dragging or plain boring, but it may be the other way around and be loved by many.

Writing a book is easy, but writing a good book is another thing. Any book may be written by putting words on paper, binding the leaves, and sell it to the public or give it away. But writing a good book is a little more complicated. Why? It is because you need to put in extra effort in writing a good book. You need to work.

This work would include selecting a theme for the book's story. A sensible plot is needed. A little research on the subject matter is mediocre at best, an in-depth one would provide excellent results. A coherent formation of thoughts will best convey the book's purpose. A widely appreciated topic can be the basis of the book, allowing easy immersion in the readers' world.

There really is no secret to writing a book. There's no magic involved. How to write a book relly depends on each individual. It is dependent on each author-to-be's style. It may start with how he or she was inspired to write a book and it may end with the same event or object that sparked that inspiration. Some may write nonstop until the book is complete and some may take a breather every few chapters.

Anyone can write a book . It is just a matter of style and choice whether a book will be created. There really is no one ultimate guide on how to write a book . The instructions are within each and every author.

Descriptive Writing Techniques

Describe from memory
Take the topic or object that you are going to write about and picture it in your mind. Take yourself to where that object is located. It maybe a room in your home, a favorite animal, or maybe it is fresh, homemade cookies. Imagine that you are close enough to touch the object. Can you feel it? Look at it closely. What does it look like? What do you feel as you are imagining the object you are going to describe? Use these thoughts to generate free writing. Write every detail about the object that you can remember.

Sketch
Draw a picture of your object. Visualize it in your mind and sketch from memory, or place yourself comfortably near the object. Allow yourself to fully explore the object and then draw what you experience. Don't worry about not being an artist. This sketch is just for you to help you fully explore the details of the object. Sketching the object also gives you a creative outlet for when you are struggling with putting pen to paper.

Objective and subjective data chart
For me the best way to really get some ink flowing in all directions for a descriptive piece is to break apart the subjective and objective material. A good way to do this is to take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the top of one side of the line write the word objective and on the top of the other side of the line write the word subjective. Now, keeping your topic in mind write everything you can think of that is objective about the object. If you think of something subjective don't worry, just write it in the other column. Do this until you have exhausted yourself or the store runs out of paper. Don't worry about having complete sentences; just get ideas on paper. With this, you have a good start to writing a descriptive piece. All the details are right in front of you. You may also discover which way you would like to lean toward in regards to whether or not you want your piece of writing to be more subjective, more objective or balanced.

Create a list of desired outcomes for your descriptive piece
The big advantage to this is direction. If you have no idea where you are going with your piece of writing about your Kermit the Frog underwear, then you may want to do some brainstorming on what you want to accomplish. Do you want the reader to be moved by the piece because the object is special to you? Do you want the reader to rush out of their house and drive to yours because you are trying to sell your car? Think about what you for an outcome both for you and the reader. Write them down on a piece of paper (or type them).

Different degrees of objective & subjective balance with different paragraphs
When you have a good feel for your topic, write a couple of paragraphs with different objective and subjective balance. Write one paragraph that is completely objective. For example, something you would find in the classifieds section of your newspaper. Then write a short paragraph that is heavily subjective. Do a couple different paragraphs to get a feel for what would work best for your object with regards to your intended reader and your relationship to the object. For instance, if you are writing about your favorite chair, you may find it makes more sense, and is more fun to write about it with the balance leaning toward subjective writing.

So, unless you have all the photography education funding in hand or you are able to get yourself enough loan, it is important to check if the schools provide scholarships or other forms of financial assistance for their students. Other very essential thing, which should be kept in mind, is that you will need to invest in some of your own photography equipment. Therefore, it is recommended that you ask in advance for a listing of equipment that the photography school offers to their students as well as a listing of equipment that you need to buy beforehand. This will, definitely, help you in knowing the total cost of your photography education.

These recommendations will assist you in short-listing of investigation questions so that you can make a wise and well educated decision.

The art of photography which can get a better shape once it is taught from the best school. So, make sure that you take a wise and insightful decision while selecting your institute or colleges in India or abroad; it should be in the lines with your requirements and talent.

It is Important to Read to Your Child by Amy Holly

Babies or toddlers love to be read to- it is never too early to start. If you have spent time reading to your children, then you already know that children love to hear a good book. Favorite stories can be read over and over, and a child still likes guessing what will happen next and turning pages. Besides a bonding opportunity, it can teach children things they will use in school, such as letters and pictures.

For success in school, many other skills depend on the child's ability to read and comprehend instructions. Starting on this important skill early will teach your child to love reading and that it is not difficult. At an early age, you will want to start a routine of reading to your child if you hope to have strong readers when they begin school. Teachers aren't the only ones to teach the skill.

You should select books differently for a baby or toddler than you would for older children and small babies might enjoy colors and shapes versus pictures and letters. Select books with characters and a story line for older children, in order to keep them interested and progress in difficulty as your child masters each level.

Story time should be a routine that your child looks forward to. Creating a comfortable space and routine is important, and if you use it as part of their bedtime routine, letting your child pick the story will give them a reason to look forward to bedtime. Budget reading time or you may find yourself reading indefinitely.

Your child can participate and you can make up a sound for when it is time to turn the page. If you have more than one child, taking turns is something important for them to learn, as well. You can have them point out certain things in the pictures or see if they can find certain letters or words.

Extend your child's reading into real life. Find comparisons with things they know shapes, letters that start the same words, or even going on trips to find things you have read about. Perhaps a trip to the zoo will help a book come to life.

Children can learn new things from reading a book. Even scary experiences, such as starting school can seem easier if they have heard a book about it before experiencing it. Reading a book can make it seem manageable to your child and can ease their fears.
Reading to your child is important, but it is just as important that your child see you reading. If it has been awhile since you have been a reader, there is not a better time to start. Even if it's something as simple as a magazine, your child needs to see you reading. Pick up a book on a trip to the library for yourself.

Reading with your child will teach your children not only the basic function of reading, but will create a bond that will last a lifetime. What better way to prepare your child for success in not only school, but in life? The skills learned and closeness you will develop will propel them into a strong start in life.

How the English Language Has Been a Bridge Among Cultures by A Nutt

In terms of global conditions, the English language has been a significant and important influence. Economic globalization has lead to a quick expansion of the English language in all countries around the world. For this reason, as well as the advancements of technology, the English language has become a bridge among most cultures. Many experts believe that the expansion of the English language should not only be accepted, but also encouraged.

Because of the advancements in communication technologies, and the increase in travel to other countries, learning English not only helps one learn about other cultures and customs, but it also helps to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations. When understanding another's language, one is introduced to a new culture and customs which thereby reduces the chance of conflicts. It will also help one see other points of view and understand how they express it.

Although traveling to other countries may often seem like a venture for those who have money, with the internet, one can virtually travel to an English speaking country. With a click of the 'mouse,' one now has the ability to meet and converse with native English speakers. By understanding the English language, one will understand common phrases, meanings, and jargon, which promotes a better understanding of one's culture and practices. As well, many cultures believe that their customs are the best. Exploring a foreign culture with knowledge of the English language will help one see and appreciate another way of looking at things. For instance, by visiting a museum in another country that speaks English as their native language, one will learn and appreciate the art they are viewing and will acquire a deeper understanding of that countries culture.

Because of globalization, businesses, governments, and organizations are now more connected than ever. Understanding and speaking the English language will encourage international cooperation and diplomacy. Areas such as international health care, humanitarian aid, and technological advancements, are bringing the world together like it has never been before. Many international organizations mandate that all people involved speak English, given that the translation costs would be enormous. Communicating and understanding one another is essential to global success and well being.

Learning English is also seen as a way of promoting peace. Understanding each other's language, customs, and practices, will help minimize any misunderstandings which could lead to a personal offense. As well, communication and understanding is essential to resolving conflicts between two countries. Nations must understand one another culturally, socially, and politically, in order to engage in meaningful and productive discussions.

Culturally speaking, the advantages of learning English have too many benefits to be ignored. Learning English as a second language while maintaining one's own sense of pride in their native tongue will help maintain one's traditions while learning about another culture. Traveling abroad and communicating with English speakers either socially or in business allows one to embrace another culture and develop an appreciation and understanding of the differences, and even reveal many common traits. It will help tear down cultural barriers, dispel myths, and promote an overall sense of peace and prosperity.

Your Baby Can Read

Milestones of Learning to Read as a Baby/Toddler
* Learning that the shape of the word is the most important factor * Baby recognizes her/his first words * Parent notices the baby understands a written word * Learning to read the first 50 words * Learning to read around 200 words * Learning to read two- and three-word phrases * Learning to read phonetically * Learning to read sentences from left-to-right * Reading a book from cover-to-cover * Learning to read quickly * Reading a book the child has never seen from cover-to-cover

Dr. Titzer posted these milestones on his blog, where he emphasizes that the child must first learn that the shape of the word is the most important factor (rather than the color, texture, font, etc.) I have no idea if TJ has reached this milestone, and can't really see how one would test for such a thing, but I am glad to have this guide of how things could possibly unfold in terms of learning to read while using this system.

So, Dr. Titzer's blog gives many more practical insights into the use of the system. Yes, he probably wrote this somewhere in the Parent Guide, but I guess I am in need of a refresher.
"It is helpful to repeat a subset of the words more frequently than the other words. In the DVDs we repeat the words "clap," "wave," "mouth," and "nose" more than we repeat other words. Please repeat these four words more than other words when your child has just started our program. Use our books, sliding word cards, and our other word cards. Also, show the child these words in other contexts on paper, whiteboards, signs, etc

Eventually your child will remember how the words look in addition to understanding what the words mean. The first word is probably the most difficult word to learn, so repeat a few words many times in the initial months."
