Avoid Anti Aging Skin Care Products That Contain Synthetic Chemicals

To understand how an anti aging skin care product works, you must have an idea of why skin ages. Sun exposure is one of the main reasons that the skin ages. It makes the skin thinner and is noticeable on the most exposed areas of our bodies: the face and hands. Other things present in your environment also contribute to skin damage and aging, like cigarette smoke.

As we get older, dead skin cells are not replaced as quickly as they once were, collagen production slows and there is a loss of elasticity in the skin. Excellent anti aging skin care products include ingredients that address these factors.

To be worth your consideration, any product would need to have ingredients that are beneficial for your skin. But what I find amazing, is the incredibly long list of ingredients on products. You practically need to be a chemist to just read it! Do all of those ingredients help your skin? If they do not, then why are they included?

One group of chemicals that is listed on a majority of personal and anti aging skin care products are various forms of paraben. All commercially used parabens are synthetically produced. They are widely used as preservatives, because of their ability to kill bacteria and fungus. Often, there will be multiple forms of this chemical in the product. If they can kill bacteria, it make sense that they could harm human cells as well. They have no benefit for your skin.

Methyparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben (the most common forms) are an endocrine disruptor. They block or mimic the actions of hormones. They do damage at very low levels of exposure. Every function of the body is regulated by the endocrine system. The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep cosmetic safety database rates this ingredient as a high hazard.

There is growing concern, that because parabens are so ubiquitous in our personal care products, they may be having an effect on our health and the environment. The chemical is absorbed into the body when the cream or lotion is applied. When we bathe, the chemical goes down the drain and into the water system.

It is not that the amount of the parabens in any one product is a real concern. The concentration is usually very low. The concern is the cumulative effect of all the different products used everyday over a lifetime and the millions of people using them.

Any anti aging skin care products that contain ingredients that may be harmful should be avoided. Every opportunity to reduce your exposure to synthetic chemicals will improve your overall health. Read the label on everything you use carefully. A high quality anti aging skin care product will not contain any synthetic chemicals at all.
