It is Important to Read to Your Child by Amy Holly

Babies or toddlers love to be read to- it is never too early to start. If you have spent time reading to your children, then you already know that children love to hear a good book. Favorite stories can be read over and over, and a child still likes guessing what will happen next and turning pages. Besides a bonding opportunity, it can teach children things they will use in school, such as letters and pictures.

For success in school, many other skills depend on the child's ability to read and comprehend instructions. Starting on this important skill early will teach your child to love reading and that it is not difficult. At an early age, you will want to start a routine of reading to your child if you hope to have strong readers when they begin school. Teachers aren't the only ones to teach the skill.

You should select books differently for a baby or toddler than you would for older children and small babies might enjoy colors and shapes versus pictures and letters. Select books with characters and a story line for older children, in order to keep them interested and progress in difficulty as your child masters each level.

Story time should be a routine that your child looks forward to. Creating a comfortable space and routine is important, and if you use it as part of their bedtime routine, letting your child pick the story will give them a reason to look forward to bedtime. Budget reading time or you may find yourself reading indefinitely.

Your child can participate and you can make up a sound for when it is time to turn the page. If you have more than one child, taking turns is something important for them to learn, as well. You can have them point out certain things in the pictures or see if they can find certain letters or words.

Extend your child's reading into real life. Find comparisons with things they know shapes, letters that start the same words, or even going on trips to find things you have read about. Perhaps a trip to the zoo will help a book come to life.

Children can learn new things from reading a book. Even scary experiences, such as starting school can seem easier if they have heard a book about it before experiencing it. Reading a book can make it seem manageable to your child and can ease their fears.
Reading to your child is important, but it is just as important that your child see you reading. If it has been awhile since you have been a reader, there is not a better time to start. Even if it's something as simple as a magazine, your child needs to see you reading. Pick up a book on a trip to the library for yourself.

Reading with your child will teach your children not only the basic function of reading, but will create a bond that will last a lifetime. What better way to prepare your child for success in not only school, but in life? The skills learned and closeness you will develop will propel them into a strong start in life.
